About the Role

**Job Summary:**

Townsville Catholic Education is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Officer - ASL First Nations Education to join our team. This is a term time, fixed term (12 months) position completing 30 hours per week across five days.

Key Responsibilities:

  • **Collaborate with Teachers:** Work in collaboration with teachers to provide appropriate advice, practical support and guidance to assist First Nation students with learning and development.
  • **Cultural Support:** Provide assistance to First Nation students to optimise student learning outcomes in a supported environment with a range of cultural and educational programs.
  • **Emerging Leaders Program:** Actively promote student engagement in the Emerging Leaders Program.
  • **Support Services:** Demonstrate competency involving the application of knowledge and skills to a range of tasks to support teachers deliver contemporary learning and teaching.
  • **Accountability:** Ensure that all duties are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by the Principal.

Key Accountabilities:

  • **Classroom Support:** Work in classrooms, with teachers, providing support for First Nations students.
  • **Student Progress:** Liaise with teachers to determine the progress and wellbeing of First Nations students.
  • **Transition Support:** Assist First Nations students in the transition from community to school and be a positive role model.
  • **Pastoral Care:** Provide guidance, pastoral care and advocacy for First Nations students and their families.
  • **Cultural Awareness:** Provide awareness to school staff on First Nations student backgrounds and First Nations Community Perspectives.
  • **Program Support:** Support First Nations Students engaged in the Emerging Leaders Program.
  • **Community Engagement:** Develop and maintain relationships with local First Nations community Groups and Traditional Land Owners representatives.
  • **Cultural Events:** Assist in coordination and promotion of First Nations cultural education events, activities and programs within the School Community.

Requirements:

  • **Experience:** Demonstrated capacity to organise and prioritise a range of tasks and set priorities to meet deadlines in a busy environment.
  • **Knowledge:** Ability to provide information and support to stakeholders regarding First Nations communities.
  • **Teamwork:** Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • **Understanding:** Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the learning needs of First Nations students.

Skills and Attributes:

  • **Communication:** Understanding of, and ability to develop, links between the school and First Nations communities.
  • **Presentation:** Professional presentation skills with the ability to proactively engage and enthuse both students, parents and other colleagues.
  • **Computer Literacy:** Well-developed computer literacy capacity to work in partnership with classroom teachers.
  • **Organisational:** Organisational planning and coordination skills including the ability to demonstrate flexibility and manage demanding or competing tasks.

Mandatory Criteria:

  • **Working with Children Suitability Card:** The successful candidate will require a paid Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card, No Start policy developed by Queensland Government.
  • **Driver's Licence:** Current Driver's Licence.
  • **Travel:** Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville.
  • **Physical Requirements:** Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.

Desirable Criteria:

  • **Certification:** Cert III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, Cert III in Children's Services or Cert III in Education Support.
  • **First Aid:** First Aid qualification or a willingness to complete.
