Job Opportunity: Regional Engagement Specialist

This is an exciting role within the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) that focuses on engaging with stakeholders and community members in regional and remote areas.

The successful candidate will play a key part in maximising participation in the 2026 Census by connecting the ABS to local communities, assisting operational teams in achieving outcomes through targeted engagement activities, and maintaining a record of these activities via the ABS Stakeholder Management System.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing, updating, and reviewing engagement plans for assigned regions.
  • Promoting Census participation through community visits, promotional activities, and presentations.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with local service providers, Local Government, and community organisations.
  • Providing in-field assistance for Census operational activities and maintaining a safe working environment.
Essential Qualities and Experience

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Demonstrated experience or knowledge in working with or advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Able to connect and engage with a range of service providers, communicate effectively, and develop strong working relationships.
  • Effective communication skills to present information to both small and large groups or communities.
  • Capability to work independently, prioritise tasks with limited guidance, and make decisions independently.
  • Sound local area knowledge and the ability to read and navigate maps.
