About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team at NSW Health Pathology. As an Anatomical Pathology Specialist, you will play a critical role in the pre-analytical and cut-up aspects of Anatomical Pathology, working closely with our team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of our laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform specimen direct transfer and dissection with accurate description and dictation.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient daily operation of the specimen reception and cut-up areas.
  • Participate in the return of specimens to patients.
  • Independently perform specimen triage, including fresh and fixed specimens, shared/split specimens, and cases requiring follow-up with requestors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to Anatomical Pathology practice.
  • Postgraduate study in specimen dissection and/or extensive substantiated proficiency performing non-complex and complex specimen dissection and direct transfer in a diagnostic anatomical pathology laboratory.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills, with familiarity with terminology required for specimen dissection.
  • High level of initiative, self-directed, and personal commitment to ongoing learning and development.
  • Sound decision-making capability with an unblemished track record in relation to specimen handling and patient safety.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member and autonomously, recognizing limits and escalation requirements for the role.
  • Sound understanding of the framework and guidelines pertaining to pre-analytical and specimen cut-up requirements in a diagnostic laboratory.
  • Flexibility to service and patient needs, with a commitment to quality and customer service improvement.
