About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal Officer to join our team at The State Of Queensland. As a Senior Legal Officer, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services to support the Department's child protection initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and supervision of a team of independent professional legal officers, providing guidance on matter management, work allocation, and performance monitoring.
  • Provide high-level legal advice to the Official Solicitor and other OCFOS staff, as well as departmental staff, on complex and sensitive matters.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, independent legal services on behalf of the Queensland Government, including undertaking duties out of hours for urgent applications.
  • Supervise the provision of early and independent legal advice, preparation of court materials, and representation in child protection applications and related matters.
  • Liaise and negotiate with CSSCs, regions, and the Director of Child Protection Litigation on complex matters.
  • Coordinate and represent the department in child protection-related meetings and provide expert legal advice and representation in appeals to the Children's Court of Queensland.
  • Develop high-quality systems, practice standards, and quality assurance processes to ensure effective legal services delivery.
  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships with key stakeholders to ensure a consistent, coordinated, and effective approach to legal services provision.
  • Monitor practice trends and report to the Official Solicitor as required.
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities and contribute to building a team culture that supports the department's vision and values.
Requirements
  • Admission or eligibility to gain immediate admission as a Barrister-at-Law or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
  • Possession of a 'C' class driver's license for travel purposes.
  • Ability to be on-call for out-of-hours emergency legal advice and support.
