Regulatory Veterinarian Job Description

The Regulatory Veterinarian is responsible for providing veterinary services at race meetings and other locations, ensuring the integrity and welfare standards of thoroughbred racing in Victoria.

This role requires a strong interest in regulatory, raceday, and equine welfare work, with excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills. The successful candidate will have a degree in Veterinary Science from an Australian university or an equivalent overseas qualification recognised in Australia, with registration or eligibility for registration as a veterinarian in the State of Victoria.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide veterinary services at race meetings and other locations, including examination of horses and provision of expert advice to Stipendiary Stewards.
  • Manage drug control protocols and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Lead and support projects aimed at improving racehorse safety, welfare, and racing integrity.
  • Assist the General Manager – Veterinary Services in auditing veterinary service delivery and ensuring continuous improvement across all operations.
  • Prepare reports and documentation to support the Veterinary Services Team's operational and strategic initiatives.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Registered veterinarian with a strong interest in regulatory, raceday, and equine welfare work.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to make sound clinical and ethical decisions in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong attention to detail with demonstrated excellence in report writing, database administration, and document management.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to rapidly changing operational demands while maintaining high standards.
