Marine Biogeochemist Role

We are seeking an experienced Marine Biogeochemist to join our team and contribute to research that informs the use and conservation of Australia's marine environments.

This role offers the opportunity to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements aligned with CSIRO's strategies. You will engage in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to investigating specific industry or community problems.

The position is based in Hobart, Tasmania, where you will work with the Ocean Carbon Observations team. Your duties will include:

  • Utilizing your understanding of seawater chemistry to lead the synthesis of biogeochemical data for delivery to international networks.
  • Contributing to ocean carbon research via visualization of observations and model output to meet project milestones on time.
  • Participating in field campaigns on research vessels including repeat hydrographic sections and Southern Ocean process studies (typical duration 3-8 weeks).
  • Contribution to laboratory analysis of ocean carbon samples using existing bench-top instrumentation and sensors under development.

For appointment at the higher salary level (Research Scientist Staff CSOF6), additional duties will include:

  • Leading field campaigns on research vessels including repeat hydrographic sections and Southern Ocean process studies (typical duration 3-8 weeks).

Requirements:

We require a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline area such as marine chemistry, marine geochemistry, marine biogeochemistry, or chemical oceanography. Experience in collecting and analyzing dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, oxygen, nutrient, and other biogeochemical samples is essential. Demonstrated publishing in high impact science and capacity to work at sea for extended periods are required. Additional desirable criteria include experience in maintaining instrumentation and sensor calibrations and documentation of analytical procedures and results.
