Research Associate – Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), Hobart

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) hosts world-leading research strengths in Oceanography, Fisheries Sciences, Marine and Freshwater Biology, and Southern Ocean and Antarctic sciences. The research associate position will undertake active research in the Oceans and Cryosphere centre at IMAS, contributing substantively towards the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 'The Role of Eastern Antarctic Polynyas in Global Ocean Circulation'.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Prepare a paper for publication which quantifies the seasonal evolution of the surface mixed layer in response to air-sea fluxes and sea-ice growth and decay in East Antarctic polynyas.
  2. Extend recent analyses within the Prydz Bay region across East Antarctic polynyas to examine regional (spatial and temporal) variability in seasonal DSW formation, including the role and contribution from less active and/or smaller polynyas.
  3. Deliver research outputs within the scope, timetable, and budget of the project.
  4. Disseminate research results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, at national and international meetings, and through seminars.

Your Application

To be successful, your application should demonstrate:

  • A PhD in a relevant field such as physical oceanography, climate science, or other quantitative marine sciences.
  • Excellent understanding of ocean dynamics and climate role.
  • High-level quantitative skills demonstrated through analysis and interpretation of observational data and/or numerical simulations.
  • Ability to conduct original, independent, and innovative research with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to achieve collective and individual outcomes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for both specialist and general audiences.
  • Proven record of publishing research in peer-reviewed literature.

Remuneration

Role will be at either:

  • Academic Level A with a total package up to $108,076 (base salary $71,433 to $92,373 + 17% superannuation), or
  • Academic Level B with a total package up to $133,842 (base salary $98,537 to $114,395 + 17% superannuation).
