Cultural Practice Advisor Role
Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will draw on your personal experience and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions and customs to provide high quality, culturally safe and appropriate child protection services to children, families and carers serviced by the centre.
Targeted Vacancy
It is a genuine occupational requirement that this position be filled by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. One of the referees should be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to the applicant's background, knowledge, skills and experience as they relate to the cultural capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Effectively engage with children, families, carers and service providers (including both government and non-government agencies) to support the cultural needs of children and families to achieve their identified case plan goals and cultural support plan goals.
- Provide individualised casework supports to children and families subject to tertiary child protection intervention including facilitation of positive family connection and reunification through knowledge of the community and cultural protocols; kinship care options; referrals and advocacy for culturally specific services; and support of transition-from-care plans.
- Work collaboratively with key stakeholders, including children and parents, families and Recognised Entities to support the establishment and strengthening of effective safety and support networks, including connection to extended family, community, country and culture.
- Provide cultural advice and direction to assist in informing decisions about the safety needs of children, particularly where complex child protection worries are present.
- Participate effectively in a multidisciplinary team to deliver well-planned family support services to children and families experiencing vulnerability.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous learning, training and professional development to ensure practice knowledge and skills are contemporary and evidence-based.
- Prepare and maintain quality case records in accordance with departmental case management requirements.
- Contribute to strengthening workforce cultural capability through sharing your cultural advice, knowledge of communities, and awareness of culturally significant processes and events.
