Job Title: Chief Financial Officer

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is seeking a seasoned and dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our leadership team.

In this pivotal role, you will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Diocesan Leadership Group to guide, mentor, and inspire a high-performing Finance team, ensuring the highest standards of financial management and governance.

As an experienced CFO, you bring a diverse background in both not-for-profit and commercial sectors, equipping you with the skills to support our agencies in achieving the goals outlined in our strategic plan, which align with our Mission, Vision, and Values.

Your success in this role will depend on your ability to support the CEO in driving accurate and effective financial performance.

With strong commercial acumen, a vision for growth, and a passion for sound governance, you will foster trust and respect throughout the Diocese.

You hold CA/CPA qualifications (Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand or CPA Australia) and/or an MBA, with significant experience as a CFO.

Post-graduate qualifications in Data and Analytics and/or equivalent experience in Financial Leadership are highly desirable.

You will be responsible for the financial direction, oversight, and management of a diverse portfolio, ensuring budgetary compliance and financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide finance expertise and oversight across the Diocesan agencies of Catholic Care, Catholic Schools, St Nicholas Early Education, Catholic Community Fund, Hunter Community Housing, Shared Services, and our Parishes.
  • Deliver quality and timely finance functions, including statutory and regulatory requirements, payroll, project management, accounts payable/receivable, financial budgeting, planning, reporting, and audit coordination for the Diocese and its Agencies.
  • Ensure optimal financial decisions are made by the Diocese, including being a member of the Diocesan Leadership Group to achieve the Diocese's financial goals.
  • Engage with advisory boards, including the Diocesan Advisory Board, which incorporates the Diocesan Finance Council, Catholic Community Fund Advisory Board, and the Catholic Care Advisory Board.
  • Engage with the Diocesan Audit & Risk Committee and the Strategic Asset Management Committee.
Requirements:
  • Ability to respect and uphold the ethos and teachings of the Catholic Church and an ongoing commitment to work within the Catholic Dioceses Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a senior finance leadership role and demonstrated executive leadership skills.
  • Extensive experience analysing complex financial data and providing strategic, tactical, and operational financial advice.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with proven ability to develop and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to develop, review, and refine long-term financial plans and financial management policies that underpin sustainable long-term financial health.
  • Extensive understanding and demonstrated ability to monitor and maintain legislative compliance.
Qualifications:
  • Qualified accountant - Chartered Accountant (Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand) or Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA Australia).
  • Post Graduate Qualifications or equivalent experience within a Financial Leadership role.
  • Post Graduate qualifications in Data and Analytics (Desirable).
  • Experience as a Responsible Manager in the Financial Services industry (Highly desirable).
