Role Overview

This role is responsible for leading the food and beverage service, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The Cafe Manager at Hawthorne Garage oversees the DNA espresso bar and gourmet deli cafe operations, managing every aspect of customer experience from greeting to leaving.

A key focus of this position is to create a positive and productive team environment, where staff are motivated and well-trained in delivering exceptional service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the full food and beverage service journey, including efficient order taking, accurate menu preparation, and timely delivery.
  • Enforce quality control standards across all aspects of the cafe's operations, ensuring consistent high-quality products and presentation.
  • Monitor speed of service during peak periods, maintaining an optimal balance between efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee sales growth initiatives, including upselling and suggestive selling techniques to increase average spend.
  • Act promptly on customer feedback, addressing any issues or opportunities for improvement.
Team Leadership & Culture
  • Lead daily team huddles to set expectations, priorities, and standards.
  • Ensure new hires complete comprehensive induction, training, and onboarding programs within two weeks.
  • Coach and mentor staff regularly on customer care, product knowledge, and service excellence.
  • Manage team accountability, addressing performance gaps early and reinforcing high standards.
  • Recruit and retain skilled and motivated team members who share our vision and values.
Operations & Stock Management
  • Manage inventory and ordering systems to meet demand accurately without overstocking or understocking.
  • Conduct regular stocktakes and maintain accurate records to inform purchasing decisions.
  • Monitor waste levels daily, identifying causes and implementing corrective actions to minimize losses.
  • Prepare and display products to ensure freshness and appeal, adhering to strict food safety and hygiene guidelines.
  • Develop and implement effective promotions and loyalty programs to drive sales growth.
Compliance, Safety & Food Standards
  • Maintain strict compliance with food safety regulations and standards across all cafe operations.
  • Oversee daily cleaning schedules, temperature checks, and food safety logs to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to incidents, documenting and addressing any issues that arise.
Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in cafe management, hospitality, or related fields.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality service, achieving sales growth targets, and maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience in managing teams of 10+ staff.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and mentoring abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with high attention to detail.
