The Department of Defence is seeking a highly skilled Safety and Compliance Specialist to join their team in Cairns, Queensland.

As a key member of the Strategic Welfare function, this role will be accountable for performing and achieving complex work health and safety work within an integrated workforce.

This includes maintaining a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making, and Defence's mission and policy requirements.

A successful candidate will have strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and provide advice on legislation, policy, and procedures.

They will also be responsible for undertaking specialist research and analysis, conducting reviews, assessments, investigations, and procedural, clerical, and administrative support work to achieve results.

Key responsibilities include coordinating and contributing to the work of a team consistent to a work plan, providing advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members, and being accountable to set work priorities, allocate work, and manage workflows and performance.

This role requires strong stakeholder engagement and management skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.

Strong planning, time management, and prioritisation skills are essential, particularly when managing complex work packages in compressed timeframes.

The ideal candidate will have experience in researching and analysing activities to identify and address work health and safety risks to capability, contributing to the implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems, and providing advice on the application of work health and safety legislation and Defence policies and procedures.

With a strong bias for action in driving outcomes, including problem-solving and flexibility, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate financial and contracting experience, as well as skilful communication (both written and verbal).

Knowledge of Defence and/or Space is highly desirable but not mandatory. Some domestic travel may be required.

The successful candidate will be required to have or obtain a Negative Vetting level 1 security clearance before commencing in the role.

Estimated Salary: $95,000 - $105,000 per annum
