HMAS Cairns plays a pivotal role in supporting fleet and resident units based in Cairns, ensuring their operational readiness and success. As the only Naval base in Far North Queensland, our team is dedicated to providing essential services, including maintenance, logistics, and training, to various fleet units and operations across the region.

The Role

This APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer position involves complex work health and safety work within an integrated workforce. You will be accountable for maintaining a well-developed understanding of and compliance with relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making, and Defence's mission and policy requirements.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will organise your workflow and make independent decisions relating to your area of responsibility.
  • You will interpret and provide advice within the strategic welfare function area based on legislation, policy, and procedures.
  • You will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessments, investigations, and perform procedural, clerical, and administrative support work to achieve results.
  • You will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent with a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.

What We're Looking For

  • You should have strong skills and experience in researching and analysing activities to identify and address work health and safety risks to capability.
  • You should be able to contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
  • You should have high-level planning, organising, and prioritising skills, as well as the ability to manage complex work packages in compressed timeframes.
  • You should possess excellent stakeholder engagement and management skills.
