Position Overview: Professor of Mechanical Circulatory Support

The Mechanical Circulatory Support Program is at the forefront of developing innovative artificial heart technologies and related solutions. Collaborating with esteemed academic institutions, healthcare providers, and industry leaders, we aim to create cutting-edge advancements in cardiovascular care for patients suffering from heart failure.

This pivotal role involves directing the development of the MiniPump device, a compact blood pump designed specifically for patients with severe heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Responsibilities include overseeing the engineering processes necessary for the design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing of the MiniPump, as well as coordinating collaborative efforts with other key investigators on projects involving physiological control systems, remote monitoring technologies, and pre-clinical evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead research initiatives focused on the MiniPump's development, ensuring that project milestones are achieved.
  • Manage the product development lifecycle through pre-clinical testing, utilizing simulations and benchtop models.
  • Forge and enhance partnerships with external stakeholders, including clinicians and industry experts, to expedite MiniPump development.
  • Deliver regular updates to program directors and funding bodies regarding project performance and milestones.
  • Oversee project management and financial planning for AHFP initiatives, including talent acquisition and retention.
  • Engage in commercialization efforts by analyzing market needs and securing funding opportunities.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications in reputable scientific journals and representation at conferences.
  • Implement university policies to ensure equitable access to education and maintain workplace health and safety standards.

The successful candidate will be appointed at either the Associate Professor or Professor level, contingent upon their qualifications and experience as per the university's classification standards.

Appointment Type

This position is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for a duration of four years.

Selection Criteria
  • A doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with significant experience in rotary blood pump development.
  • Proven expertise in mechanical circulatory support design and prototyping, with a track record of advancing prototypes to manufacturing.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a regulated environment, knowledgeable in GLP and GMP standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships within complex research environments and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a talent for public speaking and engaging diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and large-scale projects.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching staff to foster professional growth.
Compensation and Benefits

The remuneration for this position is as follows:

  • Academic Level D: AUD $192,265 to $211,831 per annum, inclusive of superannuation.
  • Academic Level E: AUD $247,679 per annum, inclusive of superannuation.
