
Vulnerable Population Advocate

This role is designed to provide essential support services to vulnerable populations. As a Housing/Shelter Support Worker, you will play a pivotal part in creating a nurturing atmosphere of home and family for those in need.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement resident support plans in collaboration with the team lead/site supervisor and support team as needed.
- Foster trusting relationships with residents while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Conduct regular wellness checks to ensure residents' physical and emotional well-being.
- Assist with the setup and cleanup of the shelter, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
- Distribute essential supplies, including harm reduction materials, personal hygiene items, cleaning products, meals, and other necessities.
- Support residents with daily tasks, such as room cleaning and organization.
- Assist with applications and referrals to relevant community services.
- Design and implement short-term intervention plans tailored to individual needs within program guidelines.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of these plans and discuss concerns with the supervisor.
- Gather information about clients' problems, needs, and risks to inform support strategies.
- Provide basic counseling sessions using active listening, conflict resolution, and psycho-educational methods.
- Maintain accurate files for assigned residents.
- Offer resources and referrals to other community service providers as needed.
- Employ various techniques to engage resistant clients, adhering to social work standards.
- Empower residents to develop independent life skills, such as household management, medication management, socialization, and decision-making.
- Respond to medical emergencies, including overdoses, and maintain a safe environment for marginalized individuals.
- Basic computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention techniques and harm reduction approaches.
- Familiarity with local community services available to shelter users and residents.
- Able to work independently, show initiative, and think creatively.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to respond promptly to radio calls in a professional manner.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques and ability to apply them.
- Capacity to work in intense, challenging environments.
- Physical ability to lift up to 30 pounds and navigate stairs for extended periods.
Diploma in a related human or social service field.
At least one year of recent experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
