Senior Dam Engineer

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure the safety, functionality, and sustainability of tailings and slimes dams throughout their lifecycle.

This may involve reviewing initial designs and construction, as well as providing ongoing regulatory oversight of monitoring, maintenance, and risk management.

The position is crucial for advising on emerging issues related to tailings and slimes dams that may impact communities, infrastructure, and the environment.

  • Review and develop guidelines for the industry on tailings and slimes dams, aligned with industry standards like ANCOLD.
  • Assist the Compliance Team with audits and inspections, which may require extensive travel to remote mine sites throughout Victoria.
  • Review work plans and variations for slimes / tailings dams, requiring intimate knowledge of the ANCOLD TSF guidelines and an understanding of qualitative risk assessment processes.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including industry and technical consultants, demonstrating technical assertiveness and professionalism.
  • Identify tailings dams with a High or Extreme Failure Consequence Category and oversee rigorous review by third-party specialists.
  • Develop short and long-term recovery strategies for catastrophic failure events.

You are a professional engineer with a relevant engineering degree and experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of dams.

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • A sound understanding of the risk assessment process as it applies to mine and quarry stability, with knowledge of audits, inspections, and incident management.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and project management skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and negotiate with industry, government, and the community.
  • The ability to plan and manage input to several different technical requests with competing deadlines.
  • A valid Victorian Driver's Licence and the ability to travel within Victoria.
