About the RoleYou will play a crucial role in supporting Traditional Owners and communities in their recognition, management and sustainable use of their lands and waters. Your work will contribute to delivering meaningful social, cultural and economic outcomes through expert advice, representation and negotiation.
Key Responsibilities- Native Title Claims: Develop and implement strategies to support Traditional Owners in asserting their native title rights;
- Land Rights Claims: Assist in preparing and presenting land rights claims under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth);
- Negotiation and Agreements: Negotiate agreements with proponents for mining, energy and renewable energy activities, as well as other land uses such as pastoralism, public infrastructure and Indigenous businesses;
- Administrative and Environmental Advice: Provide strategic litigation and administrative advice on environmental matters affecting Indigenous communities;
- Strategic Litigation: Conduct research and provide expert advice on strategic litigation opportunities to advance the rights of Indigenous peoples.
- A current practice certificate in an Australian jurisdiction;
- At least 2 years post-admission experience in legal practice;
- Strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, government and proponents;
- Knowledge of the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act and the Native Title Act;
- C Class Drivers Licence and willingness to undertake remote travel in a manual 4WD vehicle or light aircraft.
