We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Experimental Scientist to join our Biogeochemistry and Microbiology Team at CSIRO Energy. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in supporting and facilitating scientific activities, including laboratory maintenance, upkeep, and ongoing experiments.
Key Responsibilities- Assist research scientists, engineers, and other laboratory personnel in their work, providing technical support and expertise in molecular biology, chemistry, and microbiology.
- Implement, develop, and modify existing methods and procedures for DNA/RNA extraction, purification, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and high-throughput amplicon sequencing workflows.
- Undertake analyses using mass spectrometry as required, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
- Participate in fieldwork as needed, collecting and processing samples for analysis.
- Develop and implement instrument methods and experimental protocols for sample testing, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and data, ensuring timely and efficient reporting.
- Compile and analyze molecular, chemical, or microbial experimental data, interpreting results and providing recommendations for future research directions.
- Manage chemical inventories for the microbiology and chemistry laboratories, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Organize and schedule instrument maintenance and certification, including software updates and licensing.
- Coordinate maintenance of safety systems for the geomicrobiology and chemistry laboratories, as directed by Laboratory Custodians.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Molecular Biology.
- Experience in high-throughput laboratories with repetitive tasks, including DNA/RNA extractions, purification, PCR, and high-throughput amplicon sequencing workflows.
- Experience in research support roles or equivalent positions, with a strong understanding of laboratory safety and quality protocols.
- Experience with mass spectrometry (LC or GCMS or equivalent) and analytical chemistry and/or microbiology.
- Full unrestricted driver's license.
- Experience with microbial culturing and isolation, particularly with anaerobic microorganisms.
- Environmental fieldwork experience, including sample collection and processing.
