Job Description
Position Objectives:
This role is to provide consultation, support and professional supervision to the Financial Counselling Program staff and to lead best practice within the multidisciplinary team. The role will directly deliver financial counselling casework to clients of the program and will work with the Manager and Team Leader to build capacity within the broader team. Staff sit within a multi-disciplinary team, that provides a range of Financial Counselling and support options, specifically for people who have credit and debt problems, including individuals, their families and significant others.
The Financial Counselling Program has funding from both Commonwealth and State. Services include direct casework, individual and/or group advocacy and negotiation, referral, community education and development and financial capability building. Additionally, the Financial Community Wellbeing Program, a component of the team, engages a variety of stakeholders and communities to increase their financial literacy and money management skills through the provision of information, community education sessions and support.
Financial Counselling aims to result in a client’s financial problems being partially or fully resolved; a client being able to make informed decisions on the best course of action to resolve their financial difficulties; and or a client gaining an improved ability to manage their financial affairs in the future.
The Financial Counselling Program is based in Mildura and delivers services from a variety of settings; this includes regular outreach services to the communities of Robinvale, Swan Hill and outpost services to the Mallee District Aboriginal Service (MDAS) offices and Domestic Violence Services in Mildura and Swan Hill, together with telephone counselling and/or community education for the Northern and Southern regions of the Mallee. The program also outreaches into New South Wales to support cross border communities and may provide financial literacy education with other team members.
This position will work closely with the whole team from Intake to service provision and/or appropriate referral, and contribute to collaboration with other Mallee Family Care programs where appropriate. The Financial Counselling Program targets vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the Mallee communities (Vic and NSW), and has specific targets relating to people experiencing or escaping from family violence as well as people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.
- The person employed as Senior Financial Counsellor will be expected to have significant previous relevant experience in the field and to have held the Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling) for over 2 years and be eligible with the relevant state association to become an accredited professional supervisor (in Victoria as per FC Vic).
- A current driver’s licence and a willingness to travel and preparedness to be accommodated overnight when required.
