Key Duties of the Position

As the Air Force Historian, you will be responsible for managing the Air Force History Program under the Director General History and Heritage - Air Force (DGHH-AF), guiding APS and Reservists, and providing mentorship to emerging historians. You will deliver high-level Air Force history advice to the Director General History and Heritage - Air Force, oversee strategic tasks, set priorities, manage workflows, and coordinate high level responses to requests for information. Your role includes managing the historical application of doctrine and education, ensuring proper governance, and staff supervision.

You will lead the RAAF's Australian War Memorial (AWM) Liaison Officer, and maintain strong relationships and networks with stakeholders such as the Office of the Chief of Air Force (OCAF), Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ), the AWM, and academic and other agencies with an active interest in military aviation history, is essential. You will identify policy gaps, ensure best practices are followed, produce high quality research, and recommend solutions to strategic risks requiring an historical perspective. This role requires exceptional leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills.

The position is based in Canberra due to accessibility of official records and key stakeholders. Hybrid work, alternating between the office and working from home, is an option.

About our Team

History and Heritage - Air Force is a diverse team providing high-quality history and heritage advice and support to senior Air Force and other Defence leaders, including CAF and CDF. Comprised of RAAF Reservists and APS staff, the Branch manages programs such as: the Air Force History and Heritage Manual, Aircraft Heritage Assessments, the RAAF Static Display Aircraft fleet, the RAAF Museum and various RAAF Aviation Heritage Centres, RAAF history training and education, collection and preservation of records and artefacts, investigation of reported historical RAAF aircraft wreckage sites and Air Force's missing, and a RAAF History publishing program.

The RAAF History and Heritage team works closely with internal and external stakeholders, including the Australian War Memorial, to identify policy gaps, the application of best practices, and contribute to the preservation and promotion of RAAF history and heritage. The Branch collaborates effectively to deliver research, reports and recommendations that address strategic risks and opportunities, in support of Air Force's strategic capability, culture and engagement objectives.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the role will have extensive professional and/or academic experience in military history, education, policy and governance, and have worked with a wide range of stakeholders to develop strategic level organisational policy and guidance on history issues, preferably within a Government agency. Excellent communication (written and oral) and stakeholder engagement skills will also be required to support engagement with senior leadership and colleagues across Air Force and wider Defence. An ability to manage a busy workload and priorities accordingly is highly desirable, as is a strong and demonstrated understanding of the strategic environment within which Defence, and Air Force in particular, operates.
