Airservices Australia is a government-owned organisation responsible for managing 11% of the world’s airspace and delivering aviation rescue firefighting services at major airports. With a workforce of approximately 3,500 employees located across metropolitan, regional and remote sites, Airservices plays a critical role in maintaining aviation safety and operational readiness across Australia.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a newly established executive position that provides strategic leadership across medical governance, aviation health standards, and workforce wellbeing. Reporting to the Chief Risk, Noise and Environment Officer, and serving as a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Board, the CMO will support the development and implementation of national frameworks for fitness-for-duty, designated aviation medical examiner (DAME) oversight, drug and alcohol management, injury prevention and emergency health preparedness.
The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards, including those set by CASA, ICAO and WHS regulators. The CMO will also contribute to organisational strategy by aligning health and wellbeing initiatives with broader transformation objectives, supporting a proactive and safety-focused culture across all operational environments.
This position requires engagement with internal stakeholders and external bodies, including regulators, government agencies and clinical experts, to ensure that Airservices maintains a high standard of medical governance and operational resilience.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic advice on aviation medical standards, occupational health, and clinical governance;
- Support the design and oversight of health surveillance programs and return-to-work strategies;
- Represent Airservices in national and international forums on aviation medicine and public health;
- Advise on complex medical cases, including mental health, chronic illness and medication use;
- Support emergency preparedness, including biosecurity and pandemic response planning; and
- Promote a culture of safety, integrity and care across the organisation.
About You
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following requirements:
- Current medical registration in Australia;
- Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM);
- CASA registration as a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME);
- Postgraduate qualifications in aviation medicine and aviation physiology;
- Eligible for registration as a DAMP Medical Review Officer;
- Demonstrated experience in clinical governance, regulatory compliance and strategic health leadership in a large-scale organisation;
- Proven ability to manage complex aeromedical cases and provide expert advice at executive and board levels; and
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to represent the organisation in regulatory and industry settings.
Location
This role may be based in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney.
