ABOUT YOU

You will be a highly motivated academic, have completed or be on the point of completing a PhD in Ancient History or a related discipline, and have teaching experience relating to the role. This experience should include the development and delivery of lectures and tutorials, and development and administration of assessment, in on-campus and online environments in the field of Ancient History, broadly defined. Experience in teaching units on myth, and in teaching ancient languages (especially Latin) may be advantageous. You will be able to work both in a team and independently, and have the capacity to contribute to the administration of the Department through service roles.

Department of History and Archaeology

at Macquarie University is an interdisciplinary research-focused department with a reputation for teaching excellence, whose researchers solve key challenges facing us in the present through ethical engagement with the past. The Department is dedicated to training students who appreciate the interconnectedness of the ancient world, particularly within the Mediterranean, Near Eastern and north African regions. The Department is located within Macquarie's

Faculty of Arts

which is united in the spirit of interdisciplinary discovery. The Department is housed in the Arts Precinct, which also houses the Macquarie University History Museum, and state-of-the-art media facilities. The Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS), also housed in the Arts precinct, holds the largest collection of Roman and Southern Italian coins in the Southern Hemisphere.

Internationally recognised and celebrated as a leader in its fields, the Department is ranked in the top 100 in the world for Ancient History (QS Ranking 2024). Our experts in cultures from the earliest states to the modern world provide training in Ancient and Modern History and Archaeology in both specialist degrees (in Ancient History and in Archaeology) and majors in the Bachelor of Arts.

Essential:
- A PhD in Ancient History or a related discipline- Teaching experience in Ancient History, including the delivery and management of units, lectures, tutorials, and assessment- Evidence of creating a superior student experience and engagement- High quality interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills- An ability to work collaboratively and independently without close supervision- A capacity to contribute to the administration of the University and outreach of the Department, and interact effectively within these settings- Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion

Desirable:
- Experience in the teaching of units on myth- Experience in the teaching of Latin and/or ancient Greek- Experience in the convening of units of study
