**Job Description**:
An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Assistant to join the Population Health and Immunity Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute, as part of a translational research program studying serological responses in people living in malaria-endemic areas.
About the Position:
Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. In Australia’s neighboring countries a barrier to elimination is infections caused by the
_Plasmodium vivax _parasite. Our group aims to contribute to accelerated malaria elimination by developing novel tools specifically targeting this parasite.
A major goal of this research is the development and translation of serological markers of recent exposure to
_Plasmodium vivax _malaria infections and the identification of target antigens for vaccines. The role will involve running, optimizing and validating serological assays measuring antibody responses against parasite proteins using samples from malaria-endemic areas.
The appointee will report directly to Dr Rhea Longley at WEHI. This role will ideally involve short trips overseas to malaria-endemic countries. Key responsibilities include:
Conduct research- Key techniques include: ELISA and multiplexed Luminex assays- Handling a range of human samples- Maintain databases and sample archives; data acquisition, handling and recording; preparation of data and manuscripts; reporting to collaborators and funders- Training collaborators in malaria-endemic countries on key techniques
Administrative and laboratory support- Contribute to ordering and maintenance of lab consumables- Assist with rostered divisional duties- Development of SOPs- Maintain repository of protocols and results- Support the training of students on data collection, instrument and Lab safety
Selection Criteria
Desirable Knowledge and Skills: Experience with human based research and specific expertise in immunological assays such as ELISA and multiplexed bead assays would be highly advantageous. Experience in malaria research is also desirable.
Terms of Appointment
This position is available for One year contract on a Full-time capacity. Salary is Research Support Employee - Level 5 ($73,621 - $84,564). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
