About the OrganizationThe Industrial Relations Commission of NSW (IRC) is established under the Industrial Relations Act 1996. It plays a vital role in the NSW justice system by setting remuneration and employment conditions, resolving industrial disputes, hearing and determining industrial matters, investigating and reporting on matters referred by the Minister, and exercising additional functions under relevant legislation. The IRC also includes the Industrial Court, a superior court of record with jurisdiction over work health and safety (WHS) matters and industrial relations issues.
Role SummaryAs the Industrial Registrar you will fulfil all statutory and delegated quasi-judicial functions while delivering high-quality, professional support to the President, Judges, Commissioners and commission users. The role requires an in-depth understanding of the broad types of matters filed in the IRC.
Key Responsibilities- Performing all statutory functions as set out in the Industrial Relations Act 1996 and associated legislation including regulating industrial organisations;
- Conducting case management, directions and other hearings in accordance with Practice Notes, applicable rules and legislation;
- Hearing and determining applications under delegated authority;
- Providing high-level legal and procedural advice;
- Mentoring the Deputy Industrial Registrar;
- Ensuring the efficient and lawful operation of Registry functions.
This is a frontline/in-person role based in Sydney CBD and Parramatta. Remote work is not applicable.

Please note: The types of matters that come before the Industrial Relations Commission may give rise to exposure to sensitive and concerning material. Potential candidates are encouraged as part of the recruitment process to make enquiries regarding any potential psychosocial hazards that they may be exposed to as part of this role.
Essential Requirements- Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia;
- A minimum of five years' post-admission experience as a lawyer in NSW;
- Demonstrated legal capability, including litigation and advocacy;
- Comprehensive knowledge of industrial law, relevant legislation, and court procedures;
- A strong understanding of the IRC's role within the NSW justice system;
- Proven ability to make sound decisions subject to legal and public scrutiny;
- Willingness to attend the registry and sit in Court as required.
