ABOUT YOU:
As an experienced and detail-oriented Nurse in a perioperative setting, you will bring the following strengths:

  • Demonstrate efficiency and accuracy in setting up theatres for surgical procedures, ensuring all instruments, equipment, and consumables are prepared and available in line with surgical requirements and aseptic principles.

  • Thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, maintaining focus and adaptability amidst changing surgical schedules and clinical needs.

  • Possess a sound understanding of surgical instrumentation, infection prevention, and safe handling practices to support optimal patient outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and theatre staff, contributing to a well-coordinated and seamless perioperative experience.

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate equipment logs, stock rotation, and instrument tracking – experience with Meditech or similar clinical systems is highly regarded.

  • Champion patient safety and uphold high standards of care through adherence to hospital policies, WHS protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.

ROLE IMPACT

The Registered Nurse's purpose is to take full responsibility for planning and delivering of nursing care to patients; to make decisions regarding patient care and patient management and to assess, plan implement and evaluate patient care.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient/Resident Centred

  • Actively participate in key initiatives that contribute to improvements in person centred care.
  • Take a partnership approach to care provision by embedding person centred care principles in all aspects of work.
  • Ensure consumers receive information in an appropriate and accessible format.
  • Actively support consumers to make informed decisions about their treatment and ongoing care.
  • Ensure consumers are aware of their rights responsibilities and how to provide feedback.
  • Uphold the expected standards of service excellence.

Position Accountabilities

  • Demonstrates a professional commitment to other health care professionals by embracing a team approach to care based on mutual respect and direct communication between health professionals and embracing and actively participating in organisational change.
  • Delivers patient centred care that coordinates individualised care from admission and throughout hospitalisation, incorporating discharge planning in the plan of care.
  • Includes provision of detailed documentation of a systematic comprehensive and accurate assessment of patients.
  • Evaluates the documentation of patient outcomes.
  • Enhances the dignity and integrity of the patient and upholds their rights
  • Maintains confidentiality and ensures that patient and hospital information and records are not disclosed or misused in any way.
  • Coordinates and implements the intervention(s) identified in the plan of care / clinical path.
  • Evaluates and records progress towards expected outcomes and revises the plan of care as necessary.
  • Formulates and coordinates in conjunction with the Visiting Medical
  • Practitioner (VMP) a plan of care, making substantive nursing judgements based on the health status, physical examination, preference, care and progress of each patient.
  • Communicates patient response to treatment and care and documents accordingly.
  • Facilitates communication between the patient, family, medical, nursing, ancillary and allied health staff.
  • Initiates referrals and utilises available resources for the purpose of comprehensive care to patients and families.
  • Appreciates the complexity of moral decision making, working cooperatively with other members of the health care team to resolve ethical and clinical issues arising in patient care.
  • Participates in team and hospital activities as agreed with NUM.

Quality and Safety

  • Maintain clinical registration and any required indemnity cover (if applicable).
  • Always work within approved scope of practice under supervision by more senior staff as appropriate.
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and safety of work undertaken.
  • Take all necessary care and precautions when undertaking clinical procedures.
  • Complete annual competencies and required training.
  • Maintain skills and knowledge necessary to safely and skilfully undertake work.
  • Consult with peers and other experts and refer to other healthcare workers when appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in clinical risk management, patient safety and continuous quality improvement activities as part of day-to-day work.
  • All practices are consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health
  • Service (NSQHS) Standards, EQUiP National and relevant professional practice and ethical standards and guidelines.
  • Protect the health and safety of self and others, complying with all health and safety related policies, procedures and directions.
  • Complete required Fire and Emergency Training annually.
  • Complete required Workplace Bullying and Harassment as required.
  • Collaborate and clearly communicate with patients / clients and the healthcare team.

  • Acts as a preceptor for new staff, students and trainees.
  • Participates in annual performance appraisal and regular goal setting.

QUALIFICATIONS

MUST HAVEEXPERIENCE &REQUIREMENTS

  • Registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a Registered Nurse.
  • National Criminal History Check.
  • Specialist qualifications and/or experience as appropriate to the area of work.
  • A valid working with children check.

  • Ability to participate in and support education activities and to contribute to the development of self and other team members.
  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Ability to contribute towards effective risk management within the facility particularly in compliance with Work Health & Safety legislation.
  • Demonstrated application of contemporary infection control standards and practices.
  • Ability to participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with MS Office products.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent sitting (when completing computer-based / administrative tasks and attending meetings).
  • Frequent bilateral upper limb use for keying tasks handling equipment and patients.
  • Frequent unilateral upper limb use for mouse operation / phone use / hand written notes.
  • Occasional lifting between ground and head height – up to 5kg (eg. linen,Imed machine, medical supplies, mobility aids).
  • Occasional trunk rotation (eg. transferring patients, bed making).
  • Occasional forward reaching (eg. transferring patients, bed making, accessing linen, accessing medication and dressings).
  • Occasional gripping of objects (manual dexterity, pincer grip) when completing medications, dressing, personal care, patient notes and manoeuvring equipment.
  • Occasional carrying of items (eg. passive knee mobilisers, crutches and walking frames) from storage area to the ward.
  • Occasional trunk flexion greater than 15 degrees (eg. when changing dressings, administering medication at the bed side, making beds and completing personal care).
  • Occasional pushing / pulling (eg. hoist, beds, observation machines, linen skip, dressing trolley and mobile shower chair).
  • Rare crouching / squatting (eg. when assisting with lower limb cleaning or accessing items stored at ground level).

PPE: Gloves, Waterproof Gown, Eye Protection.
