About The Role

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation's most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities.

The Aboriginal Health Worker Female (AHWF) is responsible to provide culturally appropriate antenatal and postnatal (up to 6 weeks) support to improve the birthing experiences and birthing outcomes experienced by Aboriginal women in RPAH. The AHWF will provide direct assistance and support to expectant mothers and ensure culturally appropriate dealings with other health professionals and support staff during their stay at RPAH.

Experience in the role is desirable but not essential. This position will be working Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, although there can be flexibility in start times if needed.

Ideal Candidate
  • Female and of Aboriginal descent.
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care Practice or willing to attain.
  • Knowledge of and affinity with the local Aboriginal community but moreover part of an Aboriginal community with firsthand understanding of Aboriginal families and culture, with experience in working effectively with Aboriginal women, families and young children.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members to ensure the provision of culturally appropriate healthcare within the Women's Health, Neonatology and Paediatrics Unit.

This is an Aboriginal identified position, the applicant must be of Aboriginal descent by proof of Aboriginality, identify as Aboriginal and be accepted as such by the community. Being Female and Aboriginality are recognised as a genuine occupational qualifications and are authorised under section 31(2h) and 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
