General Responsibilities

The Small Business Relationship Manager is responsible for acquiring, developing, and deepening advice-led relationships with small businesses, typically those with annual revenues up to $5 million, by providing comprehensive financial solutions including credit, deposits, and treasury services. He or she represents Axiom Bank in the community and proactively seeks new small business relationships. The incumbent will develop relationships with centers of influence and referral sources to further the Bank's strategic priorities and will foster internal partnerships with key constituencies such as Retail branches, Middle Market Relationship Managers, and specialty industry verticals.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Business Banker's key accountabilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Directs sales initiatives and delivers effective strategies to achieve goals for revenue, loans, deposits, and overall profitability.
  • Identifies and develops small business credit (generally up to $1 million), deposit, and treasury management opportunities within the assigned coverage area.
  • Routinely contacts prospective, existing, and assigned clients to develop relationships and new business opportunities.
  • Conducts regular meetings with assigned Retail branch teams to communicate topical issues, review small business prospect and relationship opportunities, coordinate and continuously improve client-experience and servicing efforts, and jointly develop the Axiom Bank brand in the local community.
  • Possesses the ability to assess customers' financial needs and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Contributes to meeting the Bank's CRA objectives by executing on loan and deposit opportunities in CRA assessment area.
  • Coordinates with clients and internal credit underwriting and portfolio management partners to facilitate the credit process from application through ongoing servicing and monitoring.
  • Analyzes, qualifies, and determines potential loan structure upon intake of a loan request to ensure a positive experience on the part of the client and an appropriate balance of risk and profitability on the part of the Bank.
  • Ensures the application of, and compliance with regulation, bank policies, procedures, and operational integrity.
  • Demonstrated acumen in business banking, business lending, sales, relationship management, customer service, process management, coaching, colleague development, communication, and presentation.

Qualifications Summary

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or economics preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a financial institution. Must have prior business banking experience and be familiar with business life cycle and able to identify lending and cash management opportunities.
  • Proven success in sales and sales management.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with credit, risk, compliance, and operations specialists through the origination, onboarding, and servicing of small business loans.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Math proficiency, financial acumen and knowledge of banking industry, products, and regulatory considerations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Track record of leading by example and coaching teammates to "higher" results, including sales excellence, consistent delivery of exceptional service, and operational integrity.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong partnerships with local community & civic organizations, including participation in CRA-qualified activities.
  • Ability to understand and interpret financial statements and identify cash flow trends.
  • Understanding of small business credit products and processes.
  • Strong PC knowledge to include Word, Excel and applicable internal branch systems.

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent will be expected to be able to work Monday through Friday and work will mainly be performed at a branch location or client site; occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Flexibility with work location and hours may be granted if circumstances permit.
