Job location

The Lara precinct comprises four correctional centres: Barwon Prison (maximum security), Marngoneet Correctional Centre (medium security), Karreenga (medium security), and the new Western Plains Correctional Centre (maximum security), which will begin receiving people in custody in July 2025. Forensicare staff a multidisciplinary team that provides outpatient secondary mental health services to each of the locations within the precinct.

Position overview

The Mental Health Clinician delivers care within a custodial setting, practicing within a recovery framework and using sound judgement to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of patient care. In doing so, the clinician recognises the needs of the individual within the boundaries set by their profession, Forensicare, and correctional services.

This position works within a multidisciplinary team to provide care and facilitate recovery for consumers using evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches, including participation in therapeutic programs.

The Mental Health Clinician consults, negotiates, and liaises effectively with key stakeholders within the correctional system to support consumer recovery. The role requires leadership skills and undertaking clinical and other duties as allocated.

Key responsibilities
  1. Provide comprehensive recovery-oriented assessment and treatment of patients in a custodial setting.
  2. Contribute to the development and review of comprehensive Mental Health Recovery Plans, including transition, risk management, and crisis plans.
  3. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and other stakeholders, including primary health providers, Corrections Victoria, and other Forensicare services, to support care planning and delivery.
  4. Support and educate families and carers in the ongoing treatment and care of the consumer.
Key criteria
  • Approved qualification in nursing, social work, psychology, or occupational therapy.
  • For Nursing: Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent, with current AHPRA registration.
  • For Social Work: Approved degree in social work or other qualifications eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • For Occupational Therapy: Approved degree in Occupational Therapy, eligibility for OT Australia membership, and current AHPRA registration.
  • For Psychology: Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (APAC accredited) or Forensic Psychology, with eligibility for membership of relevant psychological colleges and current AHPRA registration.
  • Post-qualification experience in mental health, preferably recent experience in community mental health or secondary/tertiary mental health services.
