About the Institute

Located on the lands of the Bidiagal Clan of the Dharawal Nation (Randwick, NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique 'translational' research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products.We join the dots by connecting research answers, expert knowledge, and the voices of lived experience to deliver solutions that impact and boost the health care system for patients and practitioners alike. The Role

The Clinical Psychologist will provide high-level clinical assessment and care to patients on an individual basis and in groups within the Black Dog Institute. The role offers the opportunity to work within a dynamic and enthusiastic team made up of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists supported by a professional administrative team and patient care coordinators who contribute to a multidisciplinary, patient-centred team approach to client care.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced level Psychology services including a range of individualised and group clinical care based on professional training reflecting current ethical clinical practice as required.
  • Provide comprehensive assessment and care planning monitoring client/patient progress adjusting treatment accordingly for complex management.
  • Deliver manualised interventions with high fidelity and complete research trial monitoring as required.
  • Liaise with multi-disciplinary team to promote effective communication including verbal and written feedback to referring Doctor as required.
  • Maintain ethical and professional standards and professional development as required by relevant professional bodies and the NSW Psychologists' Registration Board.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical records reflecting adherence to BDI policies, ACHS and legal requirements.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs relevant to the needs of clients and current clinical practice.

  • Participate regularly in clinical supervision and continues ongoing professional development through education.
  • Participate in research projects that are running within the clinic and the institute.
  • Accept responsibility for maintaining and strengthening own professional knowledge and expertise.
  • Act as a role model for staff in promoting professional values and ethics.
Teamwork & Communication
  • Participate as a valued team member promoting and contributing to a supportive environment.
  • Communicate effectively with all clients utilising appropriate formal and informal channels of communication
Work Health and Safety
  • Ensure self and all staff comply with all WHS legislation and BDI WHS Policy and Procedures
  • Report any WHS hazards and significant issues to Head of Operations, People & Culture delegate
  • Work In a safe manner, applying duty of care

Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria
  • Completion of 2 year (minimum) full time equivalent accredited postgraduate Masters' or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology.
  • Full registration with the AHPRA Psychology Board of Australia, with Clinical Psychology endorsement, or eligibility to progress to the same full Medicare registration (or eligibility).
  • In depth knowledge and extensive clinical experience in the use of a variety of contemporary psychotherapeutic techniques e.g. experience providing individual therapy and running groups using CBT, DBT, Schema-Focused Therapy, EMDR and/or ACT modalities
  • Experience in the use of evidence based, best practice treatments for both short term and longer term, time limited therapy.
  • A knowledge of EEO principles and OH&S responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OH&S training.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in delivering clinical care to people with trauma presentations and PTSD.
  • Experience working with Health Professionals and Emergency Service Workers
