The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Fisheries Management Officer (Recreational Response Initiatives) to be part of our Fisheries and Aquaculture Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
The Fisheries Management Officer (Recreational Response Initiatives) is to contribute to tangible outcomes and play a key role in PIRSA's delivery of a range of initiatives to support recreational fishing with a particular focus on response to the algal bloom that has affected the State.
South Australia is a national leader in the seafood industry with a strong export industry, a highly sustainable commercial fishing industry and the largest and most diverse aquaculture industry in the nation.
The seafood industry has a gross food revenue estimate of $800m.
Furthermore, recreational fishing contributes significantly to the well-being of many South Australians and is estimated to contribute $1 billion to the State, including direct and flow-on economic contributions.
The sustainable development, management and conservation of the fisheries and aquaculture industries is governed by two Acts: the Aquaculture Act 2001 and the Fisheries Management Act 2007.
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division's core business is the administration of these Acts.
This includes being responsible for leading a collaborative approach with industry, other government departments, and with other PIRSA divisions to deliver a range of fisheries and aquaculture related services to government.
Successful implementation depends on the ability to develop and coordinate integrated delivery mechanisms within the division and across a range of stakeholders, nationally and within the state.
