About the National Measurement Institute

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system.

We deliver world-class measurement products, advice, and client services. NMI also administers the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are internationally recognised. We work to enhance and maintain these standards.

We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our people bring. NMI provides all employees with learning and development opportunities. We work to give everyone an equal opportunity to contribute and progress.

About the branch

NMI's Physical Metrology Branch provides Australia's peak measurement standards for physical quantities. This enables measurements made in Australia to be accepted internationally, which is particularly important for trade.

Our people share their expertise by providing measurement services, from calibration and testing to technical advice and training. We contribute actively to international measurement forums and enhance our capabilities through research and development in line with national and international requirements.

About the Length Standards Team

NMI's Length and Dimensional Standards team maintains Australia's primary standards for the measurement of length and angle; and provides Australia's highest-level length and dimensional calibration services. Services range from the nanometre scale up to approximately 1 km, supporting users in the advanced manufacturing, construction, defence, medical and aerospace sectors.

The team uses a range of cutting-edge equipment to meet a wide variety of measurement needs. These include measurements of surface texture and form, the calibration of end standards (such as gauge blocks), laser interferometers and surveying equipment, and the measurement of complex three-dimensional parts.

Future services will be developed to meet the needs of Australian industry and to incorporate rapidly changing technologies. This is likely to include increased digitalisation, expanding measurement of micro-scale features, and development of in-depth analysis and verification techniques for 3D coordinate measuring systems such as laser trackers and scanners. The team operates primarily from NMI's Port Melbourne laboratory, but also accesses relevant facilities at NMI's Lindfield site in Sydney.

The opportunity

NMI values continuous learning and is committed to supporting staff to reach their full potential. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain a detailed understanding of dimensional measurements and dimensional measuring equipment.
  • Develop a broad range of technical skills.
  • Gain familiarity with the traceability of measurement results to Australia's primary standards and with the calculation and propagation of measurement uncertainty.
  • Contribute to national and international technical committees.
  • Enhance your leadership and management skills, including through participation in NMI's bespoke, leaders-at-all-levels Essentials training program.
  • Collaborate with other experts both within NMI and externally.
  • Receive training and support to develop the skills and capabilities to successfully deliver the functions of the role.

Our ideal candidate

You are a degree-qualified engineer or scientist with practical, problem solving, mathematical and collaborative skills. You have a commitment to safety and enjoy working in a small, dedicated team. You are adaptable, perceptive, have an eye for detail, and you pick up new concepts quickly. You enjoy applying your technical skills to both troubleshoot existing measurement systems and to meet new measurement challenges. You find satisfaction in liaising with clients to determine their underlying needs and in developing solutions to meet those needs.

As our ideal candidate, you will:

  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Establish and maintain respectful and productive working relationships.
  • Be competent to deliver and communicate scientific and technical outcomes.
  • Have an aptitude for analysing complex systems and solving complex problems.
  • Demonstrate a work approach and behaviours aligned to NMI's values of being inclusive, innovative, accountable, adaptable, influential and strategic.
  • Be willing to grow, adapt and develop new skills as required.

In addition, experience in any of the following areas will be highly considered:

  • Familiarity in the use, calibration or verification of dimensional measuring equipment, particularly 3D Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs).
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing principles and terminology.
  • Mechanical design and practical workshop skills.
  • Familiarity with an instrument control programming environment such as LabVIEW.

Our department has a commitment to inclusion and diversity, with an ambition of being the best possible place to work. This reflects the importance we place on our people and on creating a workplace culture where each and every one of us is valued and respected for our contribution. Our ideal candidate adds to this culture and our workplace in their own way.

What you will do

Working at NMI means you are joining one of the world leaders in measurement science. NMI has a diverse range of roles and priorities that will enable you to learn new skills and expand your career in interesting and exciting ways.

As an APS Level 6 Experimental Scientist, you will:

  • Maintain and develop Australia's primary standards for length, angle and general dimensional metrology.
  • Contribute to maintaining and developing a range of calibration and measurement services.
  • Contribute to developing and delivering specialised training courses.
  • Deliver length, angle and general dimensional calibrations under an ISO-17025-accredited quality system for industry and research stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with research and industry communities to help identify emerging trends in length and coordinate metrology.
  • Apply your broad physics and engineering skills to contribute to the ongoing research activities of the team.

This role is based at NMI's Port Melbourne site but occasionally you will travel to NMI's Lindfield site in Sydney to work with other NMI colleagues and to make use of facilities located at that site.

Eligibility

The successful candidate will have a degree in engineering or science (majoring in physics).

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Are you unsure about applying? If you think you have what it takes, but don't necessarily meet every single point described, please still apply or get in touch with the contact officer to learn more about the role.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

This position is based at NMI's Port Melbourne laboratory. Periodic travel to Sydney and occasional travel to other destinations both nationally and internationally may be required.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
