The primary objective of the position is to support the delivery of the collaborative research project "Ultra Grain On-demand grading of grain structure by ultrasound assisted AM - from demonstration to industrialisation" between RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing, Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (IWS) and the Fraunhofer Additive Production Technologies Facilities (IAPT).
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the potential of grain engineering in metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) achieved through a novel use of ultrasound-assisted (US-assisted) Direct Energy Deposition.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:
- A strong research track record in the modelling of solidification processes such as laser cladding or welding processes using commercial software packages and open source software.
- Track record in the modelling of microstructure formation such as defect formation and/or grain morphology.
- Proven ability to link experimental data to modelling simulation and analyse and interpret data.
- Preferred research track record in the design and manufacture of components using metal based additive manufacturing (AM) techniques.
- Proven ability to undertake scientific research and development in research programs with multiple partners.
- Proven ability to clearly communicate research results, concepts and knowledge.
- Demonstrated initiative in research and problem solving and ability to work effectively both as a member of a research team and independently when required, to meet project outcomes and milestones.
- Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field
