Why This Role is Essential

The Student Success Officer at Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs holds a crucial position within the Student Success team. By working in close collaboration with team members, this role supports Indigenous undergraduate, postgraduate, and HDR students in realizing their full potential. The main focus of the Student Success Officer is to ensure a seamless transition and a positive and successful student journey at UNSW.

This role is dedicated to providing top-tier engagement, opportunities, and services tailored specifically for Indigenous students. In addition, the Officer maintains a diverse skill set and knowledge base across student services, offering personalized and culturally appropriate support to assist students in excelling throughout their university experience.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Proactively managing various inquiries, including timetabling, class registration, degree planning, accommodation, Centerlink – Abstudy, scholarships, employability, learning support, and special considerations
  • Prioritizing student capacities and interests to enhance their overall student experience and success
  • Contributing actively to maintaining an inclusive and culturally enriching learning environment for Indigenous students through organizing workshops, events, and activities that educate and celebrate Indigenous cultural heritage
  • Close collaboration with Indigenous staff, community members, and elders to enrich the educational and cultural journey and foster a strong sense of community and belonging for all Indigenous students

This role may involve occasional weekend and after-hour work in regional, remote, and interstate locations as necessary.

About You

  • Understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of Indigenous Australian cultures and contemporary issues (Prior experience with Indigenous students is advantageous)
  • Familiarity with legislation and policies relevant to Indigenous students in higher education, including Indigenous Student Success Program (ISSP) and Abstudy
  • Ability to assess student capacity, develop strategies for academic success improvement, and monitor progress continuously
  • Experience in creating and delivering pastoral support services, along with the ability to multitask, approach work flexibly, and respond positively to unexpected events
  • Demonstrated capability in maintaining detailed, up-to-date, and accurate records
  • Effective prioritization skills, capacity to work independently within deadlines, in a fast-paced environment, with precision and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective communication with diverse stakeholders and collaborative work within a multidisciplinary team
