About the Role
The Civic Events and Communications Officer is responsible for planning, organising and delivering Citizenship Ceremonies, along with assisting the delivery of key culturally inclusive community and civic events, internal events and projects, Ministerial events and includes providing direct support to the Mayor when attending events and meetings with key stakeholders. In organising and delivering Darebin's Citizenship Ceremonies, held on a monthly basis, the Civic Events Officer ensures compliance with the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code as directed by the Department of Home Affairs. The role also includes supervising contractors, volunteers and casual staff as part of the event delivery, ensuring that events are safe, operate successfully and meet corporate standards. Along with these monthly ceremonies, the Civic Events Officer also assists other internal departments with the delivery of small scale civic and ceremonial receptions and functions, primarily ministerial events where grant funding has been provided. On occasion, the role also assists other internal teams on the delivery of internal events. Key to the position is being able to deal with confidential matters with discretion, work well under pressure and with others (including council staff, community, artists, volunteers, suppliers and contractors) in the coordination and implementation of event plans and logistics as required by community events, social and civic functions provided by Council for the community to a high standard of presentation.


• Planning, organising and delivery of Darebin's Citizenship Ceremonies

• Collaborating with internal stakeholders to deliver civic and ceremonial receptions and functions

• Supervising contractors, volunteers and casual staff as part of the event delivery

• Communications support includes speech writing, assisting with developing content for internal communication channels (staff newsletter and intranet) and assisting with media enquiries.

Skills & Experience

• Ability to exercise judgement and solve problems.

• This role is inherently a physically active role requiring lifting and standing for long periods of time.

• An Australian driver's license is required for this role in order to travel to events and to transport materials as needed for those events.

• Prioritise conflicting needs; handle matters expeditiously, proactively and follow-through on projects often with deadline pressures.

• Ability to use initiative and make decisions independently and take an innovative approach

• Exercise loyalty, judgment and discretion regarding confidential issues.

• Demonstrated knowledge of event management

• Advanced problem solving, interpersonal, customer service & time management skills

• Ability to work independently, use initiative, work under pressure and manage multiple, often competing priorities.

• Ability to provide superior service and to respond to customer needs in a political environment

• Understanding and appreciation the role of the Mayor, Councillors and Chief Executive Officer

• Demonstrated capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and be flexible in the approach to meeting challenges.

• Demonstrated ability to use discretion and to maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues.

• Demonstrated experience in developing quality content for a range of different audiences

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
