  • As a member of the Tasmania Legal Aid Executive, the Associate Director
  • Family Law will:
  • Lead the Family Law program through the development and effective implementation of organisational strategies, policies and operational approaches to achieve program, service area and organisational objectives.
  • Contribute to and influence both the internal and external strategic context of Tasmania Legal Aid through the provision of high level contemporary and critical thinking, planning and management.

Hours per fortnight:

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available.

Duties:

  • Lead the Family Law program and manage its resources in accordance with program funding agreements, deeds, regulations, TLA directions, policies, priorities and guidelines and State Service policies and procedures.
  • Develop and deliver programs including service area advice, assistance and representation across Tasmania in accordance with prescribed funding arrangements and operational service delivery requirements.
  • Have the carriage and conduct of complex and critical family matters in the Family Law jurisdiction.
  • Develop and implement systems and processes that support devolved decisionmaking and accountability within and across the Family Law Program.
  • Manage, align and routinely report on allocated physical, financial, human resources and performance in accordance with policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with community, industry, state and national stakeholders including private legal practitioners, court staff, judicial officers, the Department of Justice, National Legal Aid the Office of the Attorney-General, Law Society of Tasmania and the Family Law Practitioners Association of Tasmania.
  • Collaborate with the Director Tasmania Legal Aid in conducting reviews on relevant and associated matters of significance; and providing legal, policy and strategic advice to Ministers, Heads of Agencies, state and national government departments and bodies and National Legal Aid.
  • Identify and provide staff development opportunities that will enhance and strengthen their and TLA's service delivery capabilities.
  • As an active and engaged member of the TLA Executive, contribute to the development and implementation of ongoing service delivery improvement initiatives, programs and strategic priorities.
  • Establish and maintain sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders to effectively resolve issues and influence others in order to advance operational and strategic objectives.
  • Promote a supportive and collegial work environment through active participation in the Executive Team and by effective management of the Family Program Team.

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants for appointment must be lawyers with at least 5 years standing as a legal practitioner.
  • Recent and demonstrable experience in Federal (including family) and State jurisdictions.
  • Admitted, or eligible for admission, as a Barrister or Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania and entered upon the roll of or eligible for admission to the High Court of Australia.
  • A current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Appointed as an Independent Children's Lawyer and Separate Representative
