Nsw Emergency Services Reserve Volunteer

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Volunteering Redcross Full time

The program
Red Cross has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914.

We are committed to strengthening and extending our emergency aid services to assist all Australians in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies.

As part of our Emergency Services team, you will support a group of over 1200 trained volunteers ready to assist locally and across the state in times of emergency.

Our work spreads far and wide, including supporting communities, groups, and individuals to prepare for emergencies, as well as assisting with response and disaster recovery.

We also work with many stakeholders to provide training in psychological first aid, response, emergency management and recovery. Our current Emergency Services Volunteers can wear many hats and are involved in all aspects of the program.

The opportunity

This is a great opportunity for those that can't commit to regular volunteering, but still want to assist when disaster strikes in their local community.

As part of our Reserve Team, you will be supporting existing Emergency Services volunteers in the field, in Evacuation centres, Recovery Centres and outreach activities.

Available shifts are sent to volunteers via our rostering system, and you will have the flexibility to decide when you volunteer your time during periods of activation.

Volunteers give countless hours, and response agencies are often inundated with offers of help.

Our teams are heavily focused on their response work during these times, meaning our capacity to recruit, train and mobilise new volunteers on the spot is limited.

The ask is that we get in early and harness the good nature of those wanting to help, so that they can confidently put their hand up when it's needed.

Your commitment:

  • Prereading
  • Upfront training in Psychological First Aid Skills (5hour webinar or 1 day facetoface)
  • Complete compliance requirements as required.
  • Attend information session (webinar or facetoface)
  • Response 101 prior to activation

As a volunteer you will:

  • Gain access to our suite of elearning modules, to further develop skills in an emergency services capacity, as well as those generally available to all Red Cross Volunteers.
  • Be ready to respond if needed, without added pressure to commit to a regular time schedule.
  • Provide support and relief to our existing volunteer teams during disaster events when required.
  • Understand our role in an Evacuation/Recovery centre and work within these guidelines.
  • Follow direction of existing volunteers and relevant government agencies.
  • Be invited to attend training and engagement sessions, to maintain ongoing relationships with our team.
  • Upskill and join a local team, including opportunities to be engaged with some of our other work in preparedness, response and recovery.

Successful volunteers are:
- open to working flexibly with all members of the community during very challenging times
- have strong interpersonal listening and communication skills
- be able to communicate in a respectful, sensitive, and supportive way
- enjoy working in teams and be driven to maintain their skills and knowledge.

  • Basic computer literacy is required.

The impact
As a Red Cross ES Reserve Volunteer, you will have a direct impact with the members of your community. You will also support and provide relief to our existing volunteer teams, during disaster events.
