About the Role


The Research Associate will contribute to the research efforts of the Future Industries Institute, in particular will undertake research on the project titled "Thermal Energy Storage for Food/Grain Drying with CST/RE to Lower Pollution" via a Commonwealth Simple Grant Agreement between the Commonwealth represented by the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, and the University of South Australia.

Core Responsibilities

  • Undertake research under limited supervision to achieve project grant outcomes; i.e. develop and test a renewable energy driven, food drying technology using lowcost thermal energy storage
  • Design and perform a range of experiments including appropriate controls to achieve planned research outcomes
  • Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
  • Provide advice to post graduate students in the appointee's area of expertise.
  • Undertake administrative duties associated with relevant research projects, as required from time to time

Essential Skills and Experience

Position 1:
Full-time

  • A postgraduate qualification in an appropriate Science or Engineering area relevant to the research area, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in designing, prototyping and testing thermal energy storage systems that exceed operation at 500 °C
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating Xray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) equipment, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation of results
  • Evidence of high quality research output commensurate with the length of research career, which is published and presented in appropriate forums
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated through written work such as research reports and research publications, and through effective liaison with external partners, colleagues and students

Position 2:
Part-time (0.8FTE)

  • A PhD qualification in Mechanical Engineering and research experience relevant to the research area
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in computer modelling of thermal energy storage systems and proficient use of Ansys software
  • Evidence of high quality research output commensurate with the length of research career, which is published and presented in appropriate forums
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated through written work such as research reports, research publications and educational materials, and through effective liaison with external partners, colleagues and students
  • Ability to plan and execute testing and research with stakeholders
