Our client, a large membership-based organisation located in Melbourne's CBD, is seeking an experienced Legal and Governance Manager with an understanding of governance and legal processes in a higher education setting.

Reporting to the CEO, this position is responsible for the organisation's governance, contracts, compliance, legal and risk functions to ensure operational transparency, accountability, and compliance with statutory obligations.


Your new role:

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders in relation to professional standards
  • Provide support for managing court proceedings, legal matters, Freedom of Information Act requests and subpoenas
  • Provide advice on decisions or transactions, with a view to minimising risks and maximising legal rights, while considering the organisation's position
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to support the Board, CEO and members
  • Formulate and implement organisational strategy and policy to embed governance across the organisation
  • Provide people leadership, management and coordination of the organisation's governance, contract management, compliance, risk and business support functions
  • Influence the organisation's ability to maintain highquality governance and risk systems that support transparent and effective decisionmaking

You will ideally have:

  • An undergraduate degree in law, with minimum 5 years' experience
  • Extensive understanding of corporate governance, risk management, compliance, quality assurance and business systems and processes
  • Practical experience developing and implementing relevant strategies and frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and transforming governance operations resulting in positive change
  • Demonstrated experience with planning, prioritising and managing competing timeframes to deliver outcomes within deadlines
  • Experience preparing reports of a paralegal nature
  • Experience providing executive officer/secretariat support to a board or committee
  • Ability to interpret policies and regulations
  • Ability to explain and advocate for the organisation's procedures and work with key stakeholder groups to assist them to understand appeals regulations and mechanisms
