Position Description Communications Officer

Purpose
The Communications Officer is responsible for creating communications content with the

aim of increasing civic participation and community engagement, improving the council's identity,

brand and presence in the community, and strengthening two-way communication with internal

partners and external stakeholders.

Working as an integral member of the Marketing and Communications team, the role will ensure

alignment with strategic objectives and consistency in communication activities across a range of

platforms and channels. The role will also work collaboratively across all parts of the business to

provide communications advice and support.

Key Deliverables

  • Develop communications content for internal and external audiences across a range of print
and digital platforms including website, intranet, publications, newsletters, and social media.

  • Ensure that all communications and marketing materials align with the CoM strategic
objectives and brand guidelines, and promote its identity, brand, and presence in the

community.

  • Support the coordination of council publications and develop advertising and promotional
materials for council events, engagements, and other activities.

  • Work with members of the Marketing and Communications team to develop content and
implement communications strategies and campaigns.

  • Support the Engagement, Media, and Events team by promoting awareness of engagement
and event activities, increasing participation and reach on engagements, and provide event

management support.

  • Provide communications support to internal business partners and promote consistency and
adherence to brand guidelines and the writing style guide.

  • Monitor the performance of communications through social media, website and other
channels and report against agreed measures.

  • Use data to inform communications and assist to identify areas for improvement and growth.
  • Ensure all mandatory and legislative requirements, along with Council policies and procedures,
are understood and met.

  • Act as champion of new systems and initiatives.

Essential criteria

  • Strong communicator who can work both independently and within a team.
  • Advanced writing skills with the ability to compose engaging and accurate content.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver highquality
outputs within required timeframes.

  • Knowledge of the methods of developing content to improve identity, brand, and
presence.

  • Ability to think strategically, demonstrate initiative, and identify ways to
continually improve communications.

Desirable criteria

  • Skills in social media platforms and content creation.
  • Understanding of Local Government and/ or political acumen.
  • Qualifications in media, communications, or related field or equivalent in experience.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of communications, monitor and track analytics,
and create reports.

  • Experience in researching, coordinating, writing, and editing publications,
flyers, articles, and blogs to support communications and marketing
campaigns.
