As a Data Center Design Principal, you will be part of an engineering leadership team in APJC, comprised of highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Control Engineers.

As the Design Principal, your regional team will be comprised of highly effective Engineers across multiple disciplines.

You will have a close collaborative relationship with the design team and the construction team in order to craft new scalable delivery strategies, update existing delivery strategies and to unblock design related construction issues and avoid their repetition on similar builds.

A key part of the role will be to impact the design and construction of our facilities to scale learnings and lessons learned to improve design delivery for APJC and Global projects, while establishing innovative procedures and protocols for the development of future systems.

Key job responsibilities

  • Engaging with internal engineer resources, internal customers, external consultants and construction teams to build trusted relationships to address design issues and construction issues and drive continuous improvement to prevent repetition of issues.
  • Driving process improvements to positively impact design related issues and quality outcomes.
  • Creating and tracking metrics related to Design Quality, Construction Quality and the incurred costs of Change Orders in construction.
  • Working in partnership with AWS Engineering leads to manage engineering resources and influence design changes based on internal customer needs.
  • Drive best practices on the team, deal with ambiguity and competing objectives, and proactively identify and mitigate risks before they become roadblocks;
  • Use creativity, good judgment and significant innovation in evaluating, simplify and developing project procedures including document control, tracking of quality trends and design related issues ;
  • Identify continuous improvement strategies focused on design and construction;
  • Engage with an experienced engineering discipline leads, influencing roadmaps, priorities and process working across multiple teams including design, construction and commissioning.;
  • Write effective narratives and present them concisely and effectively to Directors and VPs;
  • Facilitating weekly meetings with internal engineer resources, internal customers and external consultants to address design issues, meet design milestones and escalate as needed.
  • Establishing capital project design budgets and contributing to complex business cases for existing region and new region deployment.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Management, Engineering, Architecture or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 15+ years professional experience in mission critical facility design/delivery
  • Minimum of five (5) years of Project Management or Project Lead experience including RFQ/RFP process, selecting engineering teams, developing budgets, coordinating multiple consultant teams and facilitating meetings.
  • Ability to travel within the Asia Pacific/Japan/China region for approximately 30% of full-time hours and internationally for approximately 10%
  • 5 years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance.
  • Direct experience with delivering data center projects utilizing modular construction techniques, including procurement and commissioning of facilities.
  • Functional knowledge of industry standards, environmental codes, building codes and safety standards including International Building Code.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership or non-engineers, develop basic business case financial projections and create performance metrics.
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders.
