An exciting opportunity exists for a Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2 to join the dynamic and expanding team Eating Disorders Service within the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) that provides a combination of face to face and virtual care.

The role offers opportunities to participate and lead quality and process improvement initiatives within the service to support the implementation of the NSW Service Plan for Eating Disorders across NSLHD.

Where you'll be working

The Northern Sydney Local Health District Eating (NSLHD) Disorders Service is a district wide service, and you will be required to work across multiple sites providing in both face to face and virtual capacity. This may include Macquarie Hospital, Hornsby Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital, Ryde Hospital and Brookvale Community Health Centre.

MHDA Statement of Intention
The intention of the NSLHD Mental Health Drug and Alcohol (MHDA) is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

The Paediatric Eating Disorder Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a key member of the NSLHD Eating Disorder Service. They provide trauma-informed, evidence-based, direct, and virtual support to children, adolescents, and young adults (under 24 years) with eating disorders within NSLHD. For consumers under 18yrs, this may involve providing support and psychoeducation directly with the consumers their families and carers.

The CNS role uses telehealth and virtual care models to offer short-term post-discharge services to patients and their families who have presented to NSLHD healthcare facilities. They support the consumer and families to access appropriate services in the community, provide GPs and primary care clinicians support and information in the screening, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders. Additionally, the CNS serves as a liaison for clinicians, patients, and their families/carers to navigate services when requiring a step up or step down in level of care.

The CNS offers clinical leadership, support, and provides education and training to clinicians and nursing staff within NSLHD's inpatient, community, and primary care settings to ensure high-quality care across the eating disorder spectrum and to support building workforce capability and capacity within NSLHD in the treatment of eating disorders.

The CNS may provide inreach support and liaison with other NSLHD child, youth, and family services, as well as tertiary services such as the Sydney Children's Hospital Network and the Peter Beumont Eating Disorder Service.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners' Regulation Authority (AHPRA) and relevant post-registration qualifications and at least three (3) years full time equivalent clinical experience working with child and adolescent consumers with eating disorders and their families/carers or similar relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of people with feeding and eating disorders using evidenced based interventions. Demonstrated knowledge of the use of CBT-E, Family Based Therapy, trauma informed care, telehealth and virtual models of care, and delivery of group therapies in treatment and meal support.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise advanced clinical reasoning, advocacy, and care planning skills to provide and organise developmentally appropriate health care for adult consumers with eating disorders and their families/carers.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop education and training materials and facilitate education and training sessions to clinicians from different disciplines across both general services and mental health services.
  • High level interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and demonstrated capacity to engage, negotiate and collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders (such as multidisciplinary healthcare providers, GPs, non-government and other government agencies) for a client group who are experiencing complex mental health issues.
