About St Vincent de Paul Society

For more than 165 years we have been providing practical and compassionate support to people across Victoria whose daily struggles can include putting food on the table, paying essential utilities and ensuring their children remain at school to obtain an education.

Under our Good Works umbrella we have many services and programs, including soup vans, education programs, home visitation programs and VincentCare Victoria (VCV), which assists some of Victoria’s most vulnerable communities, such as people experiencing homelessness, the housing crisis and family violence, and the elderly.

About the Role:

The Senior Operations Manager - Special Works will be responsible for providing leadership and support to the Special Works teams, including Soup Vans, Education, Youth Engagement, and NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme). This position will work closely with the Society's leadership team (staff, Membership and Volunteers) to support the delivery of highly effective and targeted support programs and initiatives, to maximize the Society's response to those most at risk of poverty and disadvantage. The role is to provide clear direction to the Special Works team, with a focus on continuous improvement. It includes a focus on ensuring highly effective and targeted support programs and initiatives are in place

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Lead, manage, and inspire Special Works teams, providing clear direction and support to help them achieve their objectives.
  • Maintain oversight of the department and assume responsibility for the smooth running of day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance and safety measures are in place to protect both our team members and the individuals we assist.
  • Promote a culture of risk management among your teams, ensuring they understand their accountability and taking proactive steps to identify and resolve hazards incidents, whilst managing risks.
  • Engage with staff and volunteers to address and resolve safety incidents, ensuring timely investigation and closure of related actions. Seek support from the People and Culture department when necessary.
  • Uphold ethical practices and ensure compliance with legislation, regulations (including child safety standards), and organizational policies and procedures in all activities.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with State Council, Central Council Presidents, Regional Council Presidents, Special Works Volunteer Leaders, Senior Leadership Team, and employees while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Collaborate with membership and volunteer leaders as well as internal departments to attract new volunteers and provide them with appropriate training and support

About You:

You demonstrate a strong risk awareness mindset, actively identifying and evaluating hazards and incidents, and providing recommendations for effective mitigation strategies, with experience in volunteer recruitment, training, and support, you foster an engaged community. Your team management skills create a collaborative environment, and your excellent communication abilities build positive relationships with stakeholders. You effectively oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and efficient completion. You work autonomously while maintaining teamwork and collaboration.

More specifically we prefer that you have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Non-Profit Management, or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in non-profit management, with a focus on volunteer recruitment, training, and support.
  • Experience in managing teams and working with volunteers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive and productive relationships at all levels.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Experience in budget management and financial reporting.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
