Based on Awabakal land in Newcastle, we currently have opportunities for you to join our team and provide support to our clients, including respected Elders, by creating opportunities for connection to culture and community. We are seeking to make a practical contribution to social and cultural connectedness and improving wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal people. This role will create meaningful client relationships, shaping not only the futures of others but also your own and ensure Aboriginal cultures and languages are supported. 

These positions are part-time ongoing. Whilst we welcome applications from all candidates, these roles are targeted for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals. As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, these candidates will be assessed as a priority.

You will have comprehensive training throughout your orientation, with ongoing learning and development. This includes:

Specialist training opportunities Buddy shifts with CPA’s experienced Disability Support WorkersOpportunity to complete a nationally recognised qualification such as Certificate III in Individual Support and/or a Certificate IV in Disability

Duties will include:

Building and supporting cultural journeys for Aboriginal clients through community activities to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people enjoy high levels of social and emotional wellbeingDelivering personalised support in a group home setting by assisting clients at mealtimes, personal care, administrating medication and manual handlingIdentification of culturally safe activities in the group home such as musical therapy inclusive of the didgeridoo and clap sticks, or storytime and artEnsuring clients have access to information to make their own choices and build skills to be more independentTransporting clients, using CPA minivan, if applicable

Requirements

Knowledge and genuine commitment to helping clients to maintain a distinctive cultural, spiritual and physical relationship with their land and watersAwareness of Closing the Gap Targets and Outcomes is beneficial to the role but not essentialAbility to navigate complex and diverse client family dynamicsA current NSW Driver's Licence (P2 minimum) is preferredLive locally to Awabakal landKnowledge, understanding and sensitivity towards the social and cultural needs of Aboriginal people and their families.

A talent pool may be created for future roles and is valid for a period of 12 months.
