ABOUT THE ROLE

The Student Experience portfolio includes Student Success, Indigenous Education, Chaplaincy, Libraries, Student Life and Wellbeing. This position contributes to the provision of a professional counselling service to the University student community to facilitate the personal, emotional, social and educational transition and adjustment of students. The Student Counsellor is required to work flexibly and cooperatively within a diverse and skilled team of specialists and other colleagues in the Student Experience portfolio. The position reports to the Team Leader, Student Counselling located on the Fremantle campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a confidential and ethical counselling service to University students and where appropriate refer students to external agencies to support long-term counselling objectives.
  • Provide assessment, case-management, counselling and referral of students including students in high risk situations and with complex mental health concerns.
  • Participate in and contribute to peer and group supervision (e.g., clinical meeting, case review meeting); client outcome evaluation and other quality assurance processes (which includes maintain accurate student records and associated documentation). Deliver crisis intervention support and strategies with students and provide referrals (including secondary) to those affected by incidents involving students.
  • Delivering workshops, training and facilitating groups such as Client-Centred and Short-term Solution Focused Counselling, CBT, ACT and Mindfulness at both the individual and group level.
  • Collaborate and liaise with other departments to provide strategic and specialist input on development of University mental wellbeing, safety, pastoral care, mediation and other learning support for students.

ABOUT YOU

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualifications in psychology or counselling and relevant experience with an understanding of the higher education sector and student challenges.
  • Significant experience in delivering workshops both with individuals and groups.
  • Hold registration with a relevant professional body such as AHPRA and/or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
  • Ability to provide a range of counselling services tailored to student needs that is evidence-based.
  • Demonstrated experience in outcome informed counselling approaches, including strong assessment, intervention and referral skills.
  • Experienced in working with high risk students and in assessment and treatment of complex mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with specific concerns of diverse student cohorts including students from equity groups and international students.
  • Ability to communicate and present information to internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage time and hold strong organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise case management software for case noting and appointment booking computer literacy skills.
