About the Role

The University of Notre Dame Australia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Student Counsellor to join our Student Experience portfolio. As a Student Counsellor, you will play a critical role in providing professional counselling services to students, facilitating their personal, emotional, social, and educational transition and adjustment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Confidential Counselling Services: Provide confidential and ethical counselling services to University students, referring them to external agencies as needed to support long-term counselling objectives.
  • Assessment and Case Management: Conduct assessments, case management, and referrals for students, including those in high-risk situations and with complex mental health concerns.
  • Supervision and Quality Assurance: Participate in peer and group supervision, client outcome evaluation, and quality assurance processes, including maintaining accurate student records and documentation.
  • Crisis Intervention and Support: Deliver crisis intervention support and strategies to students, providing referrals to those affected by incidents involving students.
  • Workshops and Training: Develop and deliver workshops, training, and group facilitation on topics such as client-centred and short-term solution-focused counselling, CBT, ACT, and mindfulness.
  • Collaboration and Liaison: Collaborate with other departments to provide strategic and specialist input on the development of University mental wellbeing, safety, pastoral care, mediation, and learning support for students.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Relevant Qualifications: Hold relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology or counselling, with experience in the higher education sector and understanding of student challenges.
  • Experience in Workshops and Training: Significant experience in delivering workshops with individuals and groups.
  • Registration and Certification: Hold registration with a relevant professional body, such as AHPRA and/or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
  • Counselling Skills and Experience: Ability to provide a range of counselling services tailored to student needs, using evidence-based approaches.
  • Outcome-Informed Counselling: Demonstrated experience in outcome-informed counselling approaches, including strong assessment, intervention, and referral skills.
  • Experience with High-Risk Students: Experienced in working with high-risk students and assessing and treating complex mental health issues.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated experience in dealing with specific concerns of diverse student cohorts, including students from equity groups and international students.
  • Communication and Presentation: Ability to communicate and present information to internal stakeholders.
  • Organisational Skills: Ability to manage time, hold strong organisational skills, and respond to changing priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated ability to utilise case management software for case noting and appointment booking, with computer literacy skills.
