About the Role


Located in the Faculty of Arts on the lands of the Wurundjeri-Woiwurrung peoples, our Indigenous Studies Program is a vibrant, multidisciplinary hub dedicated to fostering understanding and appreciation of First Nations peoples and cultures. We equip future generations with insights from Indigenous Knowledges and the skills to tackle contemporary challenges in Australia and beyond.

We are seeking a dedicated Lecturer in Indigenous Studies who is a collegial team member, passionate educator and a distinctive researcher. The ideal candidate will bring original ideas and have the potential to inspire and lead within the Program.

Through your teaching and research, you will have the opportunity to help shape the field, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment for all. 

This is an opportunity to join a research-led, community-engaged, and globally recognised hub for Indigenous Studies. Your work will play a crucial role in equipping future generations with the capacity to better understand and relate with Indigenous peoples and skills to address challenges facing contemporary Australia. 

Your responsibilities will include:

Subject coordination duties including the development of Learning Management System sites and subject guides, preparing and marking assessments, selecting and supervising tutors, and consulting with students Subject delivery on campus and in-person, including preparing and conducting lectures, tutorials and seminars Conducting research and producing outputs including (but not limited to) peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, books, creative works and commissioned reports Securing research grants and external research income (with an emphasis on competitive, international and peer-reviewed) Graduate research supervision While there is some flexibility in the distribution of work activity, a Teaching and Research academic should expect 40% of their time to be devoted to teaching, 40% to research, and 20% to leadership and service

Who We Are Looking For

You are a passionate educator, capable of ensuring a highly inclusive student learning environment and understanding the learning orientations of a diverse student cohort, particularly Indigenous students.

You have strong organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

You will also have:

A completed PhD in a relevant discipline A strong record in research with a developing profile of distinctive and impactful outputs and related activity The capacity or potential to attract research grants Demonstrated capacity for excellence in teaching including in syllabus/curriculum design and subject (module) coordination An emerging record of supervision of honours and postgraduate theses
