We provide fully integrated environmental and social assessment and management services including concept and feasibility, technical assessment, consultation, approvals, delivery, operation, and decommissioning.

Umwelt are seeking to employ an experienced, collaborative and delivery focused Principal or Senior Heritage Consultant to join our growing Heritage team in either New South Wales or ACT. This role can be located within either Canberra, Sydney, or Newcastle.

Principal Heritage / Archaeology Consultant

You will have significant experience and expertise in built heritage / historical archaeological management and conservation. Their role involves overseeing and leading heritage and archaeological related projects, providing strategic guidance, and ensuring the quality and compliance of deliverables.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the delivery of heritage / archaeological management projects. This includes overseeing project teams, coordinating fieldwork, managing budgets and timelines, and ensuring that project goals are met
  • Engaging with clients to understand their project requirements, provide expert advice on heritage and archaeological matters, and develop tailored solutions that meet client needs while adhering to regulatory requirements and best practices
  • Presenting technical findings and relaying information to non-technical persons, including clients and community
  • Well-versed in heritage and archaeological legislation, regulations, and guidelines, and apply this knowledge to assess significance, develop conservation strategies, and mitigate impacts on heritage and archaeological values
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff, helping to develop their skills and expertise in heritage and archaeological management and consultancy

Senior Heritage / Archaeology Consultant

You will provide advice on built heritage and historical archaeological matters. This role requires extensive experience in conducting heritage and archaeological assessments, investigations, and evaluations to identify and assess the significance of heritage sites, buildings, structures, landscapes and archaeological remains.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments to identify, assess and evaluate heritage and archaeological resources that may be affected by proposed development projects.
  • Conduct field surveys and investigations to document and assess heritage and archaeological resources, using techniques such as archaeological excavation, archival research, field surveys, and remote sensing technologies
  • Evaluate the potential impacts of development projects on heritage and archaeological resources, considering factors such as project design, construction activities, and potential changes to the landscape
  • Comply with relevant heritage and archaeological legislation, regulations, and guidelines
  • Liaise with a range of stakeholders, including government agencies, developers, planners, and heritage organisations
  • Develop strategies and measures to mitigate adverse impacts on heritage and archaeological resources, such as archaeological excavations, monitoring, heritage interpretation, adaptive reuse, and community engagement programs
  • Prepare technical reports, assessments, and documentation summarizing their findings, recommendations, and proposed mitigation measures

The ideal candidate for either one of these roles will have strong stakeholder engagement, experience in providing advice and advocacy on heritage and archaeological matters to clients, government agencies and community groups, as well as the ability to prepare, edit and format technical reports.

Key Requirements:

  • A degree in Heritage Management/Conservation, Archaeology, Architecture or related field
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience as a Principal and 5+ years as a Senior
  • Preferably experience in a consultancy environment
  • Knowledge of relevant State and Commonwealth heritage legislation and associated regulations and guidelines
  • Demonstrate leadership experience, including project management and team coordination
  • Interest and experience with client relationship management
  • Australian Drivers licence (ideally with 4WD experience)
