**Purpose**

Under limited supervision of the Principal or nominee, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander School Support Officer provides assistance to teachers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families to support improved student learning, well-being and engagement outcomes. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander School Support Officer:
Provides cultural and pastoral support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students within the school and their families.
Participate in the delivery of school Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education support to advance student attendance, engagement and retention.
Provide information to the school community on local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and cultural perspectives and protocols.

**Accountabilities**

**_Note: _**The major responsibilities detailed below are not exhaustive of all the activities in which the role holder might engage.
- Adhere to and support the vision, mission and values of Brisbane Catholic Education and the achievement of Brisbane Catholic Education's strategic priorities
- Liaise with the principal and school staff on protocols for interacting with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in relation to staff and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the school and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education activities
- Work with teachers and school specialist staff to discuss with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents the educational progress of their children
- Work with teacher and other school staff to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in all school activities, including excursions
- Provide information to the school community about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and cultural perspectives
- Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness for all students with particular reference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Support effective relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and school staff
- Liaise with the Principal and school staff on protocols for interacting with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in relation to staff, students and educational activities
- Work as part of a school team to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in relation to their attendance, school participation and retention
- Operate as a member of a broader school support team and contribute to team meetings and broader school activities

- be eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment; and
- have a commitment to and understanding of the ethos and traditions of Catholic Education.
