Senior Primary Design Engineer Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead the design of complex engineering projects that help deliver the UK's Net Zero targets.
This is a home-based role, with opportunities to work on diverse projects spanning the complete energy system – from generation, transmission, distribution, and storage to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data, and recycling.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Developing concept and preliminary designs based on tender information.
Generating and reviewing general arrangement drawings, substation layouts, single-line diagrams, and related documentation.
Preparing and refining technical specifications for designs and equipment.
Carrying out design calculations to support plant design, including switchroom blast pressure calculations, busbar sizing, cable thermal and mechanical force calculations, and more.
Ensuring timely delivery, effective requirements management, and a "right-first-time" approach.
Achieving key performance indicators for design quality and on-time delivery.
Complying with project documentation, employer requirements, and industry standards.
Senior engineers in our team are expected to bring technical, ethical, social, and management competence to every job we deliver for our professional clients and key stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will possess:
Strong budgetary and project management capabilities.
Good commercial understanding of design and construction contract forms such as NEC.
Experience of working within contract conditions.
We actively encourage professional registration and chartership. Senior engineers are expected to be chartered or close to achieving chartership.
Key qualifications include:
Degree in Engineering (Electrical).
Chartered Status (): Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a professional body such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).
Strong experience in EHV/HV substation plant design, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within the power sector.
Full UK driving licence.
Health & Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) desirable but not essential.
