**The Role**:
As part of its commitment to providing world-class infrastructure for Australia's research and education sector, AARNet is extending its fibre optic cable network to new locations nationwide. We are dedicated to building a high-quality telecommunications network that will support the next generation of educators, researchers, and students.

To support this mission, we are seeking an experienced Health and Safety Specialist to join the Infrastructure Development Group (IDG) team and enhance AARNet's Safety framework. Reporting to the Director of Major Infrastructure Construction, this role will proactively support the Workplace, Health, and Safety of employees, contractors, and visitors at AARNet.

Initially concentrating on construction, this newly created position will focus on implementing and improving AARNet's health, safety, and well-being systems and procedures. The role involves providing advice and support to internal and external stakeholders on various WHS matters and will be crucial in developing and enhancing WHS systems and procedures from the ground up.

Initially part of the IDG team, this role will expand across the broader business over the next two years. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations. The Safety Specialist will work closely with various teams to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

While you will receive support from your colleagues, this role offers the opportunity to make it your own by developing and implementing an innovative operational plan for health, safety, and well-being to achieve positive and lasting outcomes.

**Key Responsibilities**:
**Safety Oversight**
- Implement and understand WHS policy, standards, and procedures.
- Collaborate with front-line teams to develop realistic procedures and goals based on actual work practices.
- Analyse WHS data to aid management decision-making and participate in audits.
- Assist operations with WHS tools like Risk Assessments and Critical Control Verification.
- Facilitate WHS training and support local EHS committees.
- Provide insights on process hazards, risk ratings, Safe Work Procedures, and Job Safety Environment Analysis.
- Develop and implement comprehensive safety programs and policies.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.

**Training and Education**:

- Design and provide oversight on safety training programs for employees.
- Provide ongoing education and resources to promote safety awareness.
- Maintain training records and ensure all employees are up-to-date with safety training.

**Incident Management**:

- Investigate and report on all safety incidents and near-misses.
- Develop corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
- Maintain accurate records of all incidents and safety-related activities.

**Risk Assessment**:

- Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses.
- Implement measures to mitigate identified risks.
- Monitor and review risk management processes regularly.

**Continuous Improvement**:

- Stay updated on the latest safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Identify opportunities for improvement in safety processes and procedures.
- Lead initiatives to enhance the overall safety culture within the IDG team.

**Essential Criteria**:

- A bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, or a related field is preferred. Certification V in safety management is required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a safety-related role, preferably within the construction or infrastructure development industry.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations.
- Experience in external audits and safety assurance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- This position may require occasional travel to various project sites.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments
