Duxton Bees is a large commercial beekeeping business operating in various geographic areas in the Southeast of Australia, we intend on becoming one of the largest beekeepers in the Southern Hemisphere. Reporting to the Managing Director of Duxton Bees, the General Manager ("GM") is responsible for driving sustainable company growth, through scaling up the size of operations and increasing the number of beehives under management. The GM will have a particular focus on maintaining bee health and disease mitigation. The GM will seek to drive efficiency and profitability through the implementation of best practice strategies. The GM will help to establish a dynamic team with a progressive mindset.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Operations_
- Manage all operations of the Duxton Bees business including honey and beeswax production, pollination services, queen bee breeding, exporting, logistics, workshop operations, land management, participating in client relations, industry engagement and other relevant business activities;
- Monitoring and maximising the honey and wax yield for each hive;
- Oversee logistics including the movement of the hives to suitable land holdings throughout the year and identifying the use of suitable land for the hives;
- Growing hives under management through splitting colonies and managing the purchase of hives from third parties. This includes undertaking hive quality and cost checks;
- Oversee the procurement of hives, machinery, equipment, and supplies; and
- Management of the health of hives including protocols for regular monitoring for diseases and pests, treating hives where relevant, and ensuring maintenance of detailed records of hive health.
- Financial_
- Collaborate with Duxton Capital Australia ("DCA") and the CEO to finalise budgets each financial year;
- Contribute with DCA to finalise budgets for each financial year;
- Attend and contribute to Board Meetings on a quarterly basis;
- Where necessary, have discussions with investors about the status of the operation;
- Assist with capital expenditure projects and advice; and
- Collaborate with DCA on capital raises, review of presentations, financial modelling, and capital allocation.
- Reporting_
- Assist DCA in completing monthly and quarterly assessments of financial performance against budget and operational goals; and
- Prepare a monthly operational report for Duxton Capital.
- Employee Management_
- Work with DCA to implement best practice work health safety initiatives;
- Provide advice and guidance on employee recruitment and training;
- Promote a positive people culture including promotion of diversity and gender equality across the business;
- General management of other staff including performance reviews; and
- Ensure that all employees have adequate training to complete the role at hand.
- Business Development_
- Develop relationships with stakeholders across industry, government, NGOs, and other relevant bodies to advance Australia's pollination and bee population interests;
- Work with stakeholders to ensure Duxton Bees is 'making a difference' in the industry including helping to rebuild the declining population of bees across Australia, building a sustainable bee business that can service Australia's growing pollination demand, and collaborating with industry and Government on R&D projects.
**Essential skills and experience**
- Bachelor's degree or higher relevant qualification or at least 5 years of full-time experience relevant to the beekeeping industry;
- At least five years proven work experience as a beekeeper and managing large scale beekeeping businesses;
- Knowledge of plant and animal biology;
- Strong work ethic and ability to work autonomously;
- Strong people leadership skills;
- Reasonable level of financial acumen;
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills; and
- Strong commercial acumen.
